Heritage trail, it is noted in the Doomsday book (1086AD) that the Stour valley had the highest concentration of Freemen in England, this independence and prosperity can be seen in the beautiful villages & towns of the region. In fact, this part of England can claim to be the cradle of the United States of America as the locality supplied a third of the early settlers to New England. These Pilgrim Fathers took with them the energy, spirit and self reliance that had been nurtured here for centuries. Richmond House, located in the heart of East Anglia offers an exceptionally comfortable base to explore the region's wonderful, history landscape and architectural legacy.

 Sudbury water meadows in summer

Recreation, just across the road there is access onto the water meadows. This public land runs for several miles along the Stour river with many footpaths beyond leading into open countryside. There are wonderful walks for all appetites from a short stroll to a full day's hiking. The Stour is a popular fishing location and permits are available in season. The River Stour Trust is slowly restoring navigation to the sea and actively supports canoeing, rowing and pleasure boating. The Sudbury rowing regatta in August is a summer highlight. Several sport centres provide indoor/outdoor swimming, fitness rooms, ball courts and pampering. Tennis courts, skateboarding and bowls are a few minutes walk away. Or if you like to watch team sports Sudbury has very good rugby, football & cricket clubs.
